Imagine what tomorrow would look like if today’s girls decided to become scientists

Posted on 17/11/201021/11/2010 by Europasionaria

Do you know a girl? Yes? Good.

Does she have plans for Saturday? No? Great.

Is she bored? Even better!

Imagine learning how to launch a rocket by a real astronaut, working together with an architect to design your dream home, programming a robot to walk down the school halls, using physics to play pool and ride a rollercoaster, understanding how the body works, playing with the chemistry in make-up, manufacturing new fashion designs… Fun isn’t it?

On Saturday 20 November at the International School of Brussels, 300 girls will spend an entire day esploring science and technology in fun and exciting ways. On that day, Greenlight for girls -an NGO with the mission to encourage young girls of all ages to consider a future in math, science, engineering and technology- will host its inaugural ‘Science Day’ event with a full complement of free, hands-on science and technology workshops, for girls aged 11 to 15, led by outstanding women in their fields, and some very exceptional men.

Who is gonna pay them ?
It is very hard to train scientist, and except in Germany or Switzerland, you hardly find any job. I mean decently paid one.
All those girls should learn finance or law.
Girls are just more clever than boys, they understand earlier than them that science lead to jobless in 2010 Europe.
Enough said, just my two cents

Fabrice, that’s an interesting point of view.

My mother was a math teacher and my father a electronician so when I was a girl they’ve always pushed me towards studying science. Then, at 15 I rebelled and decided I would study economics, sociology and languages. From that moment on, for my parents I was doomed. I was heading towards life-long unemployment for sure. This is a very French point of view.

In the end I did pretty well though…

However, the world of science and technology is occupied at about 90% by men. What this means is that the world is losing out on a huge part of the innovation potential. Because innovation, in all sectors, is stimulated by diversity. And innovation leads to new jobs. This is why more women need to start careers in science and technology.
